        How to search by keyword

Searching by keyword in PBS LearningMedia is the most direct way to surface the material you want.  Keyword search criteria can range from a broad topic to a specific resource name. If the first set of search results do not produce what you are looking for, try searching again using different search terms.

This section demonstrates how to search using keywords.

        • - Type search criteria into the textbox located in the top navigation menu (Figure 1.1).
        • - Tap Enter on your keyboard or click the magnifying glass icon to search (Figure 1.2).

        Figure 1

        • - Search results appear in the center of the page and the total number of results appear in the upper left side of the search results (Figure 2.1).
        • - To compact your search results, you can hide thumbnail images by clicking the Turn images off checkbox. You can also include all Teacher-Built resources by clicking the Include Teacher-Built Resources checkbox (Figure 2.2).
        • Click the Sort by dropdown menu to sort your search results by alphabetical order, date, most viewed, or most popular (Figure 2.3).
        • - You can dynamically change the search results by using the filters on the left side of the page (Figure 2.4). Some filters display a number to the right indicating how many resources are associated with that particular filter. After you have clicked a checkbox, you can click the checkbox again to uncheck the box and return to the full search result set.
        • - If a category is not expanded, click the plus sign to the left of the category heading to expand the category (Figure 2.5).
        • - Pagination is available at the bottom of the page. * Pagination varies according to the number of results.

How to browse and use keyword search

Browsing and searching by keyword are not separate entities when you conduct a search in PBS LearningMedia. You can use a combination of both options to achieve more refined results.

        • - Type search criteria into the textbox located in the top navigation menu (Figure 1.1).
        • - Click the All Grades dropdown menu and click the checkbox(es) next to the grades you want to search (Figure 1.2).
        • - Type All Subjects dropdown menu and click the checkbox(es) next to the subject areas you want to search (Figure 1.3).
        • - Type All Types dropdown menu and click the type of media you want to search (Figure 1.4).
        • - Tap Enter on your keyboard or click the magnifying glass icon to search (Figure 1.5).

        Figure 1

        • - Search results appear on the right side of the page and the total number of results appear in the upper left, along with the filters you used in your search (Figure 2.1).
        • You can change the filters in the top of the page and conduct another search (Figure 2.2).
        • - You can dynamically change the search results by using the filters on the left side of the page (Figure 2.3). Some filters display a number to the right indicating how many resources are associated with that particular filter. After you have clicked a checkbox, you can click the checkbox again to uncheck the box and return to the full search result set.
        • - Pagination is available at the bottom of the page. * Pagination varies according to the number of results.

To clear the filters, click the checked checkboxes under Grades, click All Subjects under the All Subjects menu and click All Types under the All Types menu.

        Figure 2

        * Note: Keep in mind that choosing multiple grade levels will return only the resources that have been deemed appropriate for those grade levels. If you don't get the results you were looking for, try to search again using a variation of similar keyword terms. Keywords are not necessarily categories; PBS LearningMedia uses keywords to help produce more targeted results.

        Keyword search tips

How to return all keywords in search criteria

        • - To return results containing one or more of the keywords, type individual keywords in the search textbox with no quotation marks. Example: the physics of sailing (Figure 1).

        Figure 1

        How to use filters

Filters are available in search bar at the top of the page before you initiate a search and along the left side after your search results have been returned (Figure 1).

        Figure 1

        • - Start your search with the filters at the top to receive more refined search results right from the start (Figure 2).

        Figure 2

        • - The filters you specified appear above the search results (Figure 3.1). Click the x next to any filter you want to remove. When the filter is removed, your search results automatically recalculate and display.
        • - Click the checkboxes next to the filters on the left side of the page to expand or contract the results. When a checkbox is checked and unchecked, results are automatically recalculated (Figure 3.2).
        • * To the right of some filters there is a number that represents the number of associated resources.  If Premium content is available, a Premium filter can be found at the bottom of the list of filters.

        How to browse by standards

In PBS LearningMedia, all national standards are labeled Common Core State Standards (English and Math) and National Standards (all other areas of study). Custom state standards are labeled State Standards. The labels that you see depend on the type of PBS LearningMedia account to which your organization has subscribed.

        • * Registered users of the PBS LearningMedia free service have access to national standards only.
        • * Registered users of a custom service can browse both national standards and the state standards which apply to their custom account. For instance, users of a Kentucky custom site can browse by national and Kentucky standards.

This section demonstrates how to browse by standards.
